Who is Dr. Santosh Kumar Guptha?

Dr. Santosh Kumar Guptha is a medical coding trainer, auditor and author based in Hyderabad, India. He founded MEDESUN® Medical Coding Academy and PMBAUSA LLC, and leads a group of organizations spanning coding education, credentialing, revenue cycle services and HIM consulting.

He is an AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer, one of the first generation of trainers approved for ICD-10 and ICD-11. His work covers outpatient, inpatient and specialty coding, risk adjustment, auditing, clinical documentation, HIPAA compliance and health data standards.

How did his coding career begin?

His first certification was the CPC® in 2004. Over the following years he earned 42 more, covering almost every major coding specialty, facility coding, auditing, compliance and billing.

For nearly seven years he worked in the USA, collaborating closely with physicians in Florida, New Jersey, New York, Texas and California. That hands-on experience with real practices, real payers and real audits shapes everything he teaches.

Through client work, insurance work and teaching, he has overseen the coding of around one million medical records.

Why did he turn to teaching?

He saw that aspiring coders often struggled to find quality training and guidance. To close that gap, he assembled a team of coders and billers committed to the continuous education of professionals in medical coding, billing, HIPAA compliance and HL7.

His aim is to democratize medical coding and billing education and make it affordable for all. Teaching, he says, is not just his profession but his passion, and learning has become a cherished hobby. He keeps studying so that he always has something current to teach.

What is his mission for coders in India?

He wants every aspiring coder in India to make well-informed career choices, and he wants India to become a trusted global hub for medical coding. Employers, he notes, look for accuracy, integrity, guideline knowledge and the ability to serve U.S. healthcare with complete professionalism.

His goal is to keep creating highly skilled professionals through accessible, adaptable training in medical coding, billing, HIPAA and ICD-11, built on discipline, honesty, ethics and continuous practice.

How does he keep his knowledge current?

Codes, guidelines and payer rules change every year, and he treats that as part of the job. He has submitted more than 800 CEUs to AHIMA, AAPC, PMBA and AMBA, and draws continually on client discussions, real-world coding scenarios, insurance work and the questions his students bring.

Along the way he has compiled a comprehensive set of ICD-10-CM notes that now underpin much of MEDESUN®'s teaching.

How far does his expertise reach beyond U.S. coding?

He has studied Australian clinical coding, earning HIMAA Level 1 certification in ICD-10-AM, ACHI and ACS. He has also studied SNOMED CT, LOINC and ATC classification in depth.

On the technology and compliance side, he is a Certified HL7 Specialist, a Certified HIPAA Specialist and a Six Sigma Black Belt, and he completed the Certificate Program in Healthcare Management at the Indian School of Business.

Why does he call compliance non-negotiable?

"Medical coding is a refined skill. While anyone can perform coding, adherence to guidelines and compliance standards is paramount."

Many coders assume that once a claim is coded, billed and paid, the coding must have been right. Dr. Guptha warns against that belief. Payers increasingly pay first and audit later, which means every code must stand up to review long after payment. That is why strict adherence to guidelines, compliance and documentation sits at the center of MEDESUN®'s teaching, and at the center of this book.
